Note:
I make no warranty with this. If you mess up your console or brick it by following these directions, don't blame me!
Intro
So for now, Xbox 360 update servers are still online. I was as of January 2025 able to update a 360 with really old software and even use the Kinect just fine. Other Xbox 360 online services are down, and who knows how long you will be able to update your system. I am no hardware expert, but as far as I can tell, the software lives on the hard drive, and not in nvram or some other chip on the board. This means if your hard drive dies, you will be reverted to an old out of date software with no Kinect features. Many games wont work.
Options
So you have the option of the online update, at least for now.
Some or even many games have updated software on the disc, and you will be prompted to upgrade when the disk is inserted. I was unable to find a resource that stated what games contained the software, what versions are on what games, etc. If I was to guess, the games that require the Kinect will have at least the Kinect software and maybe the system software.
Manual update via USB drive or CD. This is easy to do, and the software is available here. The software I have shows the version number 17559.
Update via USB
Since most computers today have USB ports but not CD drives, this might be the better option for most of you.
- Plug in your USB drive. Make sure its formatted in FAT32. There are plenty of guides on how to do that online.
- Download the USB system software Zip File. You can do this from Microsoft directly for now here or from us here. I suggest the Microsoft link first, it might have newer software on it, but I have it archived here in case its ever taken down.
- Unzip the file.
- Copy/Move the extracted files to the root of your USB drive. Don't put them in a sub folder or rename them.
- Once the copy is done, remove the drive from your computer and plug it into your Xbox 360.
- Restart or power on your console.
- If all is done correctly, you will be prompted to install the update.
Update via burned CD or DVD.
This is a second option. As mentioned before, you might not even have a CD or DVD drive in a modern computer.
- Download the USB system software Zip File. You can do this from Microsoft directly for now here or from us here. I suggest the Microsoft link first, it might have newer software on it, but I have it archived here in case its ever taken down.
- Save and unzip the file.
- Burn the extracted files to the CD or DVD. This all depends on what burning software you are using. Make sure the file are in the root directory of the disc and not a sub folder.
- Once you are done burning the disc, pop it in your console and restart the console.
- You should be prompted to update. Follow the directions.
Configure Kinect
If you have a Kinect, it should be good to go with this update. After I did an update, it prompted me to configure the Kinect.
Final Notes
I hope this helps someone. I archived the files here as I am sure Microsoft will remove them some day from their site.
